HEIC to JPG: Why iPhone Photos Won't Open on Windows
What HEIC is, why Windows, browsers and upload forms reject it, how to convert iPhone photos to JPG without quality loss, and the setting that stops it recurring.
You AirDrop a few photos to a Windows laptop, or email them to yourself, and nothing opens. Windows Photos throws an error, a job portal refuses the upload, and the print shop says it cannot read the file. The photos are fine. They are simply saved as HEIC, and the machine you sent them to has never heard of it.
Here is what HEIC actually is, why so much software still refuses it, how to convert it to JPG properly, and the iPhone setting that stops the problem happening again.
What HEIC actually is
HEIC is Apple's name for a photo stored in the HEIF container and compressed with HEVC, the same compression family used for video. Apple made it the iPhone default in iOS 11 back in 2017, so unless you changed a setting, every photo your camera has taken since then is a HEIC.
The reasoning is sound: at comparable visual quality a HEIC file is roughly half the size of the equivalent JPEG. Across a few thousand photos that is real storage. It also does things JPEG cannot — 10-bit colour instead of 8-bit, genuine transparency, depth maps for portrait mode, and several frames in one file, which is how a Live Photo is stored.
You will see the same thing under other names, too. HEIF is the container, HEIC is Apple's HEVC-compressed flavour of it, and some cameras write .hif instead. Same problem, same fix.
Technically it is the better format. Practically, that is not the part that decides whether your photo opens.
Why the file will not open
Apple devices
iPhone, iPad, and Mac handle HEIC natively. If you never leave the Apple ecosystem you never meet this problem, which is exactly why it catches people out.
Windows
Windows 10 and 11 can display HEIC once the HEIF Image Extensions are installed from the Microsoft Store, and depending on your build you may also need the HEVC codec, which Microsoft charges a small fee for. Until that is done, Photos fails and File Explorer shows blank thumbnails.
Android and browsers
Android has supported HEIF since version 10, so a recent phone is usually fine. Browsers are the real problem: Safari displays HEIC, while Chrome, Edge, and Firefox do not decode it at all. That single fact explains most of what follows.
Everything else
Upload forms, job portals, insurance claim pages, university submission systems, print counters, older Photoshop and Office versions. This long tail is where HEIC actually hurts, and none of it is going to update on your schedule.
Why some of your photos open fine anyway
This is the part that makes the problem feel random. Plenty of apps quietly convert on the way out: send a picture through WhatsApp or attach it in a web chat and the other side usually receives a JPEG, because the app re-encoded it before sending. Take that same photo, attach it to an email from the Files app, or copy it off the phone with Keep Originals selected, and the HEIC arrives untouched. One photo, two routes, completely different outcomes.
Stop the problem at the source
If you are converting the same photos every week, fix the camera rather than the files. There are two separate settings and most people only ever find one.
- Settings, Camera, Formats. Choose Most Compatible and the camera writes JPEG from that moment on. Photos already taken stay as they are.
- Settings, Photos, Transfer to Mac or PC. Choose Automatic and the iPhone converts to JPEG as it copies over the cable. Keep Originals sends the HEIC untouched, which is usually what surprises people.
Most Compatible costs you storage, roughly double per photo, and some high-frame-rate modes still record in the efficient format regardless. For most people that trade is worth making.
What you give up by converting to JPG
Converting is not free, though the losses are smaller than people fear.
- The file grows, usually to around twice the size, because JPEG is simply less efficient.
- 10-bit colour becomes 8-bit. Visible only in wide smooth gradients such as a clear sky, and only if you go looking.
- A Live Photo becomes one still frame. The motion is not recoverable from the JPG afterwards.
- Transparency and depth data are dropped. Portrait-mode blur is already baked into the picture, so the photo itself looks unchanged.
None of this matters for a photo headed into an email, a form, or a print. It matters when the HEIC is your only copy, so convert a copy and keep the original.
How to convert HEIC to JPG, step by step
- Open the HEIC to JPG converter and add your .heic or .heif file.
- Choose JPG unless you specifically need PNG.
- Leave the quality slider around 90 percent. Above that you add size for detail nobody sees; far below it, skin tones and sky start to smear.
- Convert and check the preview before downloading, then save the JPG alongside the original rather than over it.
The conversion is decoded and re-encoded in your own browser, so the photo is never uploaded anywhere. That also means a very large file leans on your own machine rather than a server queue.
JPG or PNG?
For an actual photograph, JPG every time. PNG is lossless, which sounds better and is the wrong tool here: a lossless photo is enormous, often several times the size of the HEIC you started with, with no visible gain.
Pick PNG only when the image is a screenshot, a diagram, flat graphics with hard edges, or something that needs transparency. Those are the cases where JPEG's compression leaves visible fringes around lines and text.
Convert first, then edit
Order matters more than people expect. Because Chrome, Edge, and Firefox cannot decode HEIC, browser-based image tools generally cannot read it either — they draw the picture to a canvas, and there is nothing to draw. Feed them a HEIC and you get a silent failure or an error.
So convert to JPG first, then run whatever else you need: an image compressor to get under an upload limit, or an image resizer for a specific pixel size. Your location is probably inside that file
An iPhone photo carries far more than pixels: GPS coordinates, the exact timestamp, the camera model, and often the lens and settings. That is convenient in your own library and much less so on a public listing, a marketplace ad, or a forum post, where it can point at your home.
Re-encoding a photo in the browser usually drops that metadata, because the tool redraws the pixels and never copies the original tags across. Usually is not always, so if the picture is going somewhere public, confirm it with an EXIF viewer and clear anything left behind with an image metadata remover.
HEIC is not a broken format, it is just an early one. Convert the copies you need to share, switch the camera to Most Compatible if sharing is what you mostly do, and keep the originals for the storage saving they were designed to give you.
